About 2,000 years ago, a red-colored crucian carp was discovered among wild crucian carp in southern China.
It is believed that the goldfish was introduced to Japan from China in 1502 during the Muromachi period (1336-1573). At that time, goldfish were exclusively kept by aristocrats and wealthy people as curious pets, and it is said that it was during the Meiji period (1868-1912) that they became popular among the general public.
The origin of goldfish cultivation in Yamato Koriyama City is said to date back to 1724, when Marquis Kiri Yanagisawa entered Yamato Koriyama from Kai (Yamanashi Prefecture).

Yamabuki, with its bright yellow flowers, is the origin of the word “yama-buki” (meaning “mountain-buki color”). It is said to have been cultivated in Japan since the Manyoshu period. Legend has it that a gold coin dropped in a valley turned into yamabuki flowers around a stream.

Origin of the name
The name comes from the sweet, cherry-like aroma of the leaves when they are rubbed. Salvia, the genus name, is also derived from the Latin words “salvare” (cure) and “salveo” (health), referring to the fact that it is a member of the sage family, which is popular as a medicinal herb.
